Enter the Monroe County Heritage Museum, and take a step back in time. Located at 31 N Alabama Ave in the heart of Monroeville, AL, the Heritage Museum occupies the Old Monroe County Courthouse, best known for its association with writers, Harper Lee and Truman Capote. Currently, the museum is home to a fully restored courtroom, as well as two permanent exhibits – Harper Lee: In Her Own Words and Truman Capote: A Childhood in Monroeville.
As the Literary Capital of Alabama and Harper Lee's birthplace, Monroeville is a common destination for anyone who is passionate about the power of books. To honor this cultural heritage, the Monroeville | Monroe County Chamber of Commerce commissioned a striking bronze statue that reflects the city's rich literary history.

With a rich literary heritage, Monroeville, AL was designated as the “Literary Capital of Alabama” by the Alabama Legislature in 1997. That same year, the Atticus Finch monument was erected by the Alabama Bar Association to celebrate the legendary hero of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Monroeville-born and -raised novelist, Harper Lee.
The Otha Lee Biggs Amphitheater is home to the "To Kill A Mockingbird" play set year round. The sets include Boo Radley's house, the Finch House, and the houses for local gossip Mrs. Stephanie, the narrator Mrs. Maudie and the morphine addicted Mrs. Dubose.
The Old Monroe County Bank Building, once the home of A. C. Lee’s law office, where local author Nelle Harper Lee wrote portions of “To Kill A Mockingbird is a great site for visitors to see. Besides the Old Monroe County Courthouse, no other local building is so integral to the town’s literary legacy.
As the Literary Capital of Alabama, Monroeville is chock full of enticements for literary lovers all around the world. On our Monroeville Main Street’s Bronze Literary Sculpture Trail Tour, visitors can view the 14 artist's installments and learn about the brilliant minds that
inspired them.
The Monroe County Public Fishing Lake located in Beatrice, AL is a well maintained public favility that offers the perfect opportunity for fishing and other outdoor activites including walking, bird watching, and picnicking. Concessions available at the lake include fishing tackle and other fishing supplies as well as drinks and snacks. There is a launching ramp for fishermen with their own boat or a fishing pier.

One option is to visit the Monroe County murals, which pay homage to the culture and history of the area, from honoring famous authors to depicting what life was like throughout the 1900s. Listed on the Alabama Register of Historic Sites, Rikard’s Mill is home to a fully functioning water-powered grist mill and museum. Rikard’s Mill Historical Park is nestled in the piney woods along the banks of the picturesque Flat Creek. The mill has served residents of north Monroe County since it was built in 1845. Visitors can watch as corn is ground into cornmeal and grits. Annual Events; Syrup- Making Days in November.

The most famous fictional town in the Civil Rights Movement was probably Maycomb, Ala., the setting
of Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “Go Set A Watchman.” In Monroeville, where Lee and her friend Truman Capote grew up, you can see many of the settings from the book and movie based upon it, including the Old Courthouse Museum in which much of the story took place.
While you’re visiting Alabama’s Literary Capital, it’s only fitting to stop by the Monroe County Public Library. Home to thousands of books and e-books, the library draws book lovers of all ages to its shelves.
